The Introduction to Defensive Shotgun class is a one-day class developed for new or inexperienced shooters wishing to learn how to use a shotgun in a defensive capacity. A quality defensive shotgun can be an excellent choice for home and personal defense and is one of the most versatile firearms available with the wide variety of ammunition choices, but they require different skills and knowledge compared to a rifle or pistol. This class gives students the tools and knowledge for considering the weapon for personal defense purposes.

In this class students will learn the advantages and disadvantages of choosing the shotgun vs other weapons for personal and home defense. Shotgun selection, setup, and gear specific to defense shotgun use will be discussed. We explain and demonstrate the proper selection of ammunition for the given defensive application. Students will be shown the various sighting systems that can be used on defensive shotguns and considerations for what will works best for their defensive application. Students will be taught the proper shooting stance, grip, sight alignment, presentation, and follow-through, as well as how to load, unload, and properly store a shotgun. Students will see how their chosen shotgun works by running it through various defensive shooting drills.

This course can be run with a reliable pump action or semi-auto shotgun in either 12 or 20 gauge. For this intro class students can run a bead, rifle-sighted, ghost ring, or red dot-equipped shotgun - basically anything you have. The only things not permitted are mag fed or bullpup style shotguns as those require a different manual of arms not taught in this class.
